Cosmic Calculation: The Martian Wage
Imagine a future where the Indian
Space Agency operates a research station on Mars.
On this base, two scientists are hard at work: Snehadit (an Indian
national) and Bianca (a foreign specialist). Even though India is
paying both of their salaries, the money ‘belongs’ to different economic
buckets back on Earth: · The GDP
Perspective (The ‘Where’): Since the work is happening on Mars,
i.e., far outside India’s geographic borders, neither salary counts
toward India’s GDP. GDP only tracks income generated within the
physical ‘home turf’. · The GNP
Perspective (The ‘Who’): Snehadit’s income is proudly
added to India’s GNP because he is a national. However, Bianca’s
income is excluded because she is a foreign resident. GNP follows the
passport, not the location. This gap between what Snehadit
brings ‘in’ to the national count and what Bianca takes ‘out’ to her home
country is exactly what we call Net Factor Income from Abroad (NFIA).
It is the cosmic ‘plus and minus’ that turns a territory-based GDP into a nationality-based
GNP. It’s a perfect cosmic reminder: GDP measures the activity on
the field, while GNP measures the wealth of the home team, no
matter which planet they are playing on. The example highlights the key
distinction between the two measures: GDP focuses on where economic
activity occurs, whereas GNP focuses on who receives the income. Whether economic
activity occurs on Earth—or, in this fictional scenario, millions of
kilometres away on Mars—the underlying accounting principles remain the same. |
